Welcome to our blog! Let us tell you our story.
Our story is a unique one for sure. Today, it’s a story that we’re really grateful for, and one that has led us on an incredible journey so far.
If you’ve been following our story as a loyal customer or have stumbled upon our business recently, you might have a few questions.
Why does thefoodco. exist? Where did it all begin? And what is the business really all about?
Well, it only seemed fitting that our very first blog post be dedicated to answering just that to share exactly who we are, as well as how we came to exist.
From the bottom up
Like many other businesses that have emerged as a reaction to 2020, ours was born out of some of the darkest of days we have experienced to date. Our Cape Town based catering business, Raw Catering Co, had lost many of our corporate clients and we knew that if we didn’t adapt, there might not have been an end in sight. We needed to do something, and fast.
COVID-19 alone was responsible for nearly wiping out many once-thriving industries and during such a difficult time, these businesses needed every ounce of support, including us. Because of this need for support, an idea was born.
The founders of thefoodco., Tyrone and Trenton, long-term business partners (and friends) decided to work on building a business that was both customer and supplier focused to fill a much needed gap of attending and supporting both sides of the coin. And so, thefoodco. came to life, providing a platform for suppliers to reach more consumers and allowing their doors to stay open, employing those who needed it and giving our customers the convenience they so wanted. The vision was to help our employees grow professionally and personally alongside us to create a sustainable business long after the pandemic is over. So far, so good.
Besides looking after our employees, we wanted to look after our customers too. The more we researched, the more we realised that an online grocery store could save us all so much time, effort and frustration that most of us face weekly with our busy lives. Let’s not forget that this solution also helps our customers limit their time in stores, away from masks and hand sanitizer.
This really is the new normal. And because of it, a new type of culture is arising – one where convenience is key. We wanted to be at the forefront of it to assist our customers in making more time for the things that they wish they had time for.
So, how much is an hour of your time worth?
2020 sure has taught us a lot, but one thing that really stands out is that our time is precious. How we choose to spend it is entirely up to us. Some value time with family, others enjoy time to themselves. Perhaps some enjoy getting outside in nature, whilst others choose to curl up with a book. Whatever it is, our time really matters to us, and whilst we all live very busy lives, we need to make time for the things that make us feel most ourselves.
The simple truth is that by avoiding countless trips to the shops each and every week, you can free up more time to do all the things ‘you wish you had time for’. You can shop the freshest ingredients and have them brought to you simply and conveniently – all whilst supporting a platform that supports others.
When you have your groceries delivered to you, you cut out the time spent trying to find parking, paying for parking, navigating the aisles, standing in queues, carrying all your bags and finally, getting stuck in traffic. We know your time is worth more than that.
Helping others, while we help ourselves.
As we mentioned, it simply wasn’t enough for us to pivot our business to benefit only ourselves. So many businesses were suffering and it only seemed natural that we partnered with the very best farmers and businesses around South Africa. It’s for that reason that we know we are contributing to something greater than ourselves, all whilst bringing you good food, from farm to table.
People matter to us, and that’s why we believe the relationships we hold with our suppliers right now will be long-lasting and lead to greater sustainability.
It’s all about you.
One thing we really pride ourselves on is the fact that a human will be with you every step of the way to ensure that your experience with us is a pleasant one. Simply put, we’re not at all like the rest. Our business puts a huge emphasis on that human element – so much so that we call every single one of our customers on the day of their delivery. We want to ensure that we deliver at a time that’s most convenient for you because that’s what it’s all about, right?
Our business promise is that we will remain customer-centric no matter what, and no matter how big our business grows, the core of our business will always be people and community. A fun fact you might not know about us is that in every decision we make as a business, we ensure it is customer focused with a drive to support our employees and suppliers.
At the end of the day, we’re here to provide people with a simple online platform to experience food, the way you like it, delivered conveniently, and with a personal experience. thefoodco. is your one-stop online grocery shop, where you can shop for everything and anything you could imagine.
We can’t thank you enough.
Thank you to all our customers for your support thus far, and for taking the time to read our story. It’s been one hell of a ride, and it’s only just the beginning. With your help, we hope to be the driver in facilitating the change and trust in the online food retail sector in Africa.
And in case you didn’t notice, we’re passionate about good food, and good people. We want you to experience real good food, prepped or unprepared, extravagant or simple – whatever your cooking style.
